James graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2000. He won the 2000 RCVS Fitzwygram prize; awarded to the most academically outstanding student from UK veterinary schools. After a year in small animal practice, he went on to complete an internship in small animal medicine and surgery, followed by a residency in small animal surgery (CertSAS) in 2003.
He was appointed lecturer in small animal orthopaedics at the University of Edinburgh in 2004 and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) in 2006. James left the University to join The Grove Veterinary Orthopaedic Referrals in January 2007.
James is married to Liz and has 2 young children.
